Robert Lewandowski prepared for next week’s meeting with the former Bayern Munich club by scoring a superb hat-trick in Barcelona’s crushing Champions League win over Victoria Plzen.

The 34-year-old Polish striker showed his worth by scoring eight goals in five matches Since leaving Bayern Munich in July.

Lewandowski, who helped Bayern win the championship in the 2019-20 season, made his Champions League debut with Barcelona with a clinical finish that doubled his lead after Frank Kessie led the hosts up front.

He then made it 3-1 in the first half with a header after Ousmane Dembele managed to recover the ball before making a fine cross.

Viktoria Plzen briefly gave her Czech Republic fans something to cheer about when Jan Sikora headered past Marc-Andre ter Stegen, but Barcelona – and Lewandowski – proved overbearing.

Lewandowski completed a hat-trick after 67 minutes after a crucial pass to former Manchester City striker Ferran Torres, who added the fifth goal.

“Lewandowski showed his class tonight. He is rightly considered one of the best strikers in the world,” said Michal Bielik, coach of Viktoria Plzen.

This result was the perfect start to Group C for Barcelona who face Bayern – 2-0 Inter Milan winner Next Tuesday (20:00 GMT).

Lewandowski joined Bayern Munich on a free transfer in 2014 after leaving Borussia Dortmund and scored 50 goals in 46 games last season as he helped Bayern win the tenth consecutive title in the German League.

He scored 344 goals in 374 games for Bayern and is the team’s second all-time top scorer behind Gerd Muller.
