The NHL changed its All-Star selection format this weekend. In previous seasons, the fans voted for four captains and the NHL selected the rest of the players. For this season’s All-Star Game, fans will vote on the final 12 players.
The NHL Hockey Operations Department selected preliminary rosters of eight players for each division, which included at least one goaltender. The three remaining players for each division team — two skaters and a goaltender — will be chosen as part of an All-Star fan vote that began at 9 p.m. EST on Thursday and will run through January 17.
Fans will vote on the NHL website and on Twitter. From January 12 through January 14, fans can vote on Twitter using the hashtag #NHLAllStarVote, followed by the player’s full name or the player’s Twitter handle. These votes will be combined with the official website votes to elect the last three players for each team.
Fans could only vote for “eligible and active NHL players”. Eligible players must be on the NHL team’s active roster as of December 1, 2022. Players who were not on the active roster due to injury or special circumstances may be added to the ballot once they are added to a team’s active roster.
The NHL has also taken measures to ensure that there is no other controversy like the one involving John Scott in 2016, when the veteran winger was voted in by the fans and played in the All-Star Game despite being demoted to the AHL by Montreal. two canadians.
The league said that “If a player is assigned/loaned to the AHL or other minor league team between December 1 and 5 PM on February 1, the player will not be eligible for All-Star balloting.” This does not include minor league cuts to adapt tasks.
If a player voted by the fans is eliminated for any reason, the next player/goalie with the most votes in that section is named to the All-Star Team.
