The iOS 16.1 and iPadOS 16.1 betas released to developers today add a new “Matter Accessories” section to the Settings app as Apple begins preparing to launch the new Matter smart home standard.

Clicking on the Material Extensions section indicates that it will display all material attachments that have been added to a connected service. The text reads “These can also be added to additional services using an application that supports Matter.”

Apple hasn’t implemented official support for Matter yet, but said it will be introduced sometime this fall. Mater is a new, interoperable secure connection standard designed for smart home devices.

Created by the Connectivity Standards Alliance that includes technology companies such as Apple, Amazon and Google, Matter ensures interoperability between smart home devices from different companies. HomeKitAnd Google Assistant, Alexa, SmartThings and other Matter-enabled smart home devices will be able to work together.

Some accessory makers were set to support Matter once the new standard was released and supported by Apple.
