At a news conference Tuesday (January 3), Washoe County Sheriff Darren Balaam described how a family member was driving Renner’s car when it got stuck in the snow.

Do you need a license to drive a Snowcat?
After the sheriff’s press conference, a reporter asked if anyone could drive a Snowcat or if you needed a license to operate one.
“She’s on a private road, so he can drive Snowcat. In that case, as Mr. Renner always does, those private roads. He was a great neighbor and he used to plow those roads for his neighbors over there,” answered Sheriff Balaam.
Now, while the Marvel representative has been on private roads, many companies require professional Snowcat operators/drivers to have at least a driver’s license. Some even require their drivers to undergo training and certification before operating a Snowcat.

Sheriff reveals “false information” about Renner’s accident
Furthermore, in his press conference on Tuesday (January 3), Sheriff Darren Balaam of Washoe County shared “details” of the Renner incident to clear up “some of the misinformation that has been circulating.”
Balaam said, “I want to be clear here as well as it is a major incident investigation and we treat it as we would any other major incident investigation. We are still conducting interviews and processing items from the scene.
“Based on our investigation, Mr. Renner’s personal car, which was driven by a family member, got stuck in the snow near his home.
“Mr. Renner went to retrieve a PistenBully, or Snowcat, an extremely large piece of snow removal equipment, weighing at least 14,330 lbs (about 6,500 kg), in an attempt to move his vehicle,” he continued.
Having successfully pulled his personal vehicle from its stuck position, Mr. Renner exits the PistenBully to speak to a member of his family. At this point, it is observed that the PistenBully is beginning to roll. In an effort to stop the rolling PistenBully, Mr. Renner attempts to get back into the driver’s seat of the Pistenbully.
“Based on our investigation, at this point Mr. Renner was run over by Pistenbully. An eyewitness detailed seeing Mr. Renner entering PistenBully and not seeing him again until PistenBully came to rest in a mound of snow in front of his driveway,” Balaam explained.
“At this stage of the investigation, we do not believe Mr. Renner was at all vulnerable and we believe this is a tragic accident.”
During the investigation, Balaam stresses that they “do not suspect any evil work.”

Local authorities share their incident response timeline
During a brief press conference yesterday (January 3), Sheriff Darren Balaam of Washoe County provided a quick timeline of local authorities and the medical response to the Renner accident.
Balaam began: “On Sunday morning at 8:55 a.m., a 911 call was received from 10-50, or a collision involving a Snowcat versus a pedestrian. The subject was run over by a Snowcat in the area of Mount Rose Highway.”
Explaining in detail about the weather and road conditions at that hour, Balaam said, “The night before, we saw a snowfall of about three feet in the Mount Rose area, and many cars were abandoned on the multiple roads, including the Mountain Rose Expressway.
“In addition, while it was not snowing at the time of the accident, Mount Rose Hoe was closed at that hour due to severe winter weather, and snow that had not yet been removed from the highway.”
Balaam shared that the first Washoe County police unit arrived on the scene at 9:30 a.m., explaining that “the delay was a direct result of weather, traffic — hopping around abandoned cars in the road — and the Mount Rose Expressway closing.”
He continued, “When the Washoe County Sheriff’s Office Unit 1 arrived at the site, the Truckee Meadows Fire Protection District and North Lake Tahoe Fire Protection District were on the scene.
“At 9:37 a.m., a care flight touched down near Mt. Rose Hoi,” Balaam added. “At 9:56 a.m., Mr. Renner was transferred via a caregiver flight to a Reno area hospital.”
