Positives

  • Efficient 20,000rpm fan cooling system
  • Uninterrupted gameplay thanks to the under-screen camera
  • Practical shoulder stimulators
  • 5000 mAh battery with 65W fast charging

Negatives

  • The speakers can use some bass
  • UDC and cameras are still mid-level
  • bulky form factor
  • No wireless charging

I have tested a number of gaming phones Over the past year, not because of how many manufacturers are in the market, but because every manufacturer (for whatever reason) likes to roll out new iterations every month or two.

This saturation in gaming phones often leads to dampened expectations and less excitement compared to phones released on a less frequent yearly basis. More importantly, these quarterly “promotions” tend to be secondary and forgettable; Maybe one or two new colors, switching to one of the camera lenses, a slightly larger battery, etc.

If these are the changes Nubia has made to the new RedMagic 7S Pro, I’d be less inclined to review them. Instead, the 7 Pro successor sees a new Qualcomm Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1 processor as well as a new multi-dimensional ICE 10.0 cooling system. Altogether, mobile gaming is getting a lot better with the new model, which makes it worthy of my attention – and yours.

Meet the game changers

If you’re reading this article, you probably know what gaming phones have to offer: top-of-the-line specs, PC RAM levels, and the futuristic industrial design that makes Latest iPhone Look like a retro console. That’s why I’ll start this review by going straight to the chase, highlighting the RedMagic 7S’s most innovative features first, and then rounding them up with insights into the rest of the mobile experience.

1. Capacitive shoulder triggers need to stay

From the early days of gaming, shoulder stimulators have been intrinsic to its accessibility and practicability. Clicking left or right with your index finger can help you reload ammo, run through enemy fields, or drag a world map to help you know where you are. While shoulder triggers are no stranger to gaming phones, the ones on the RedMagic 7S Pro are among the best I’ve tested.

Instead of using pop-up magnetic triggers, like the ones in Black Shark 5 ProRedMagic takes a more precise trajectory with capacitive touch points on the right side of the device. This means it’s easier to record inputs with that distracting, point-free sound. Nuba says the two drivers support a 520Hz touch sampling rate (not to be confused with refresh rate) so turning on taps and presses is almost instantaneous.

I found the capacitive shoulder to do a lot of use, especially for games like Call of Duty: Mobile that required me to slide across the phone screen to control the camera angle while aiming at enemies, reloading, summoning air strikes, etc. The added input is greatly appreciated, and it’s an advantage I expect to see broader adaptation as more companies get into cloud gaming.

2. The 20,000rpm cooling fan is not a gimmick

Believe it or not, shoulder triggers aren’t the coolest feature of the RedMagic 7S Pro. That honor goes to the built-in, 20,000-rpm fan that helps dissipate heat and cools the interior.

Gaming phones can get hot. Really hot. That’s why Nubia straightforwardly built a ventilation system on the inside of the phone (it’s called the ICE 10.0 cooling system) to draw cool air in and push hot air out. To my surprise, the fan worked very well, with an audible hissing sound to epitomize the effort. (You can even feel the air escaping when you place your finger on the side vent.)

However, for the first time in a while, playing graphic-intensive titles like Genshin Impact at the highest FPS settings didn’t make the phone feel like a warm hand after ten minutes or so. And when it’s time to stop the game and charge the phone, the cooling fan comes to play – preventing the battery from overheating.

Now if only we could get hold of this technology with mainstream phones.

3. No island getaway on this phone

The RedMagic 7S Pro uses the second generation of Nubia’s Under-Display Camera (UDC), which means it’s more hidden and camouflaged than ever before. If you’re a mobile gamer, you probably care more about the “under the screen” part of the component due to the less distracting viewing experience it contributes.

Whether you’re playing a full screen title, streaming Twitch, or browsing a show, the lack of a crack, hole, or dynamic islandRedMagic 7S Pro makes the phone even more immersive to use.

However, the actual quality of the UDC…is not great. I tested similar interpretations of elegant camera technology, such as Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 4, and I have always found that the quality of the output has been washed out and over-processed. While the Galaxy Z Fold 4 has a unique Flex mode to maintain its autonomous capabilities, the RedMagic 7S Pro doesn’t, which is why the “camera” is a bit of an “under-screen camera” that gets a thumbs up from me.

What about the rest of the phone?

design

I touched on the main points of RedMagic’s design above but other than the gaming-focused features, I’d like to reiterate that this phone leaked. The 6.8-inch screen is surrounded by flat edges and an overall rectangular form factor, which makes the phone feel like a brick and less like a pebble.

I’d commend the Nubia for making the most of the real estate, with two shoulder triggers, power and volume buttons, a game mode switch, and even a 3.5mm headphone jack installed along the fender. All that’s really missing is a microSD card slot for expanded memory. You know, for ROMs, simulations, and stuff.

performance

Overall, the RedMagic 7S Pro is a reliable and powerful gaming phone that offers amazing performance gains. AAA titles via Xbox Game Pass from Microsoft It loads and runs as smoothly as most popular apps like scrolling through vertical video feeds. And when I noticed any signs of slowing down, turning on the cooling fan was all that was needed to maintain peak performance.

RedMagic over Android can be an overwhelming experience, especially if you’re closer to the simpler and more user-friendly approach of iOS and “stock” Android players. There’s a home screen widget for just about any function you can think of, including a heart rate tracker for those high intensity matches. Also, be prepared for the initial launch of games to trigger popups and random notifications informing you about the cooling fan, RedMagic game space, and other optimization features.

Battery and charging

On paper, the 7S Pro’s 5,000mAh battery is promising. (It’s literally the size of the battery I was on We ask more manufacturers to adopt it!) But in practice, the huge capacity turned out to be okay and could barely get through three and a half hours of screen time (SOT). Remember, this is a gaming phone after all. And for the amount of energy you need to manage per minute, three to four hours of SOT is to be expected.

Fortunately, RedMagic’s 65W fast charging makes half-day endurance more bearable. With a 20-minute plug, the 7S Pro can go from 0% battery to nearly 70%. However, there is no wireless charging on the device.

minimum

If you are dead on a gaming phone and want to offer the most specs, look no further. The RedMagic 7S Pro is rich in software features, equipped with shoulder triggers to give you the upper hand, and it’s one of the only devices I’ve tested without overheating issues.

The base model, which comes with 12GB of RAM and 256GB of storage, Starting at $899. If you are patient enough, wait for someone Amazon Incidental Sales To get RedMagic at a higher price.

Alternatives to consider

Besides Nubia RedMagic 7S Pro, here are three worthy alternatives that you should consider:

The Black Shark 5 Pro It uses pop-up magnetic drivers instead of RedMagic’s capacitive triggers, but it’s still worth choosing if you want a gaming phone at a lower price. The screen measures 6.67 inches and is capable of scaling up to 144Hz for ultra-smooth graphics and animations.

As I mentioned at the beginning of the review, manufacturers make gaming phones like there is no tomorrow. The Red Magic 7 Pro Not to be confused with the 7S Pro – it’s a cost-effective way to get most of the features in the new S variant, including the 20,000-rpm fan and shoulder triggers.

Major manufacturers like OnePlus are carving their own paths in the gaming market by adding overclocking features, ultra-fast charging speeds, and 5G support for games on the go. The OnePlus 10T Less expensive than most gaming phones at $649, but reliable for work and play.
