Researchers, Foundation and Priests Address Mental Health in East Ghufail

The availability of mental health services in East Gainesville remains scarce even as stress, anxiety, sadness, depression and anger persist among the residents.

To deal with the problem, University of Florida researchers are working to address this disparity by joining the Florida Blue Foundation and a cooperative of local churches in a new community-focused mental health and well-being program.

According to, “Florida Blue Foundation programs focus on impacting food security, improving health equity, promoting mental well-being, healthy communities, and addressing systemic racism and the resulting health disparities.”

Through this initiative, local adults and youth are trained to become mental health and wellbeing support coaches who will then lead support groups for their peers in the community. The team is currently enrolling participants in support groups, and those interested should call 352-294-0652 for more information.
