“Rudra I” is set to power supercomputers: the center to bring its server technology to the industry, the world

The government decided to introduce to industry and the world the technology of its original “Rudra I” server, one of the sub-assemblies required for a supercomputer. This major step is aimed at realizing the “true market potential” of Rudra I.

Advanced Computing Development Center (C-DAC) of the Ministry of Electronics and Information technology (MeitY), designed and developed Rudra I server for its efforts to create a supercomputer.

C-DAC has recently entered into an agreement with a company to manufacture 7,000 Rudra I servers under the National Supercomputing Mission (NSM) for various higher education institutions and leading research institutions funded by the Government of India.

The government now wants to transfer Rudra I Server technology (ToT) through a license to companies that can assemble, manufacture and sell it on the market, including the global market, at competitive prices, according to a document reviewed by News18. “The server market, apart from NSM projects, is very large,” the document says. It says this will help “realize the true market potential of the mature Rudra I server technology” and expand it beyond NSM projects.

Why does the industry want RUDRA I?

The document says that a fully native server like Rudra I, which is designed, developed and manufactured with security credibility, will gain “exceptionally greater acceptance and advantage in security-conscious environments and businesses.” It says that with the government’s strong push towards the complete digitization of transactions and services, the demand for data centers and hyper-converged infrastructures will grow exponentially. C-DAC also promises a robust business continuity plan for Rudra chain servers.

The plan is to implement the transfer of Rudra I Server technology with a focus on making it available to Indian industries, users and society at large in the form of a finished product with commercial products at competitive prices. The document says the priority is to ensure that no infringement of intellectual property rights by any party occurs and that the business interests of all stakeholders are appropriately addressed. The government performance-linked incentive scheme will help increase the prevalence of Rudra I technology in the Indian manufacturing ecosystem, while favoring policy over Make-in-India servers in public procurement.

The government cites a survey commissioned to cite high growth and says the Indian market for servers was valued at US$1,195 million in 2021, while the India The white box server held a 19.2% share of the total server market in India, valued at $229.5 million.
