There is no perfect browser. What does the user do?

I remember, back in the day, when the browser wars reached a tantrum that no one could believe. Much of that was driven by profit and how many websites seemed too intent on focusing on one browser or the other. Some sites only work with internet browser Others set their sights Netscape Navigator (Remember those days?).

Then, of course, there was the Internet Explorer problem itself, which was a horrible product with an endless array of unsafe code and bugs that caused countless problems. All of this was exacerbated when Netscape fell off the face of the planet and was replaced by Firefox. At first, the new open source browser looked like it was sending an IE packet. It was a solid entry into the browser space and people loved it.

History tells a much different story.

Firefox was riding a roller coaster that saw him peak and tumble among bloat, feature creep, and bugs. It will swing between a simple browser and many features. This journey continued until developers realized that the only way they could stay relevant was to focus on what Firefox did best – delivering websites.

Along the way, more and more browsers appeared. Chrome, Opera, Vivaldi, Tor, Safari, Brave, Chromium, Edge (to name a few). We all know the issues with Chrome (hey, security!) and Safari has a never ending issue with resources (even on a MacBook Pro with 32GB of RAM, any particular website can cause Safari to throw a resource error.

also: What is the most popular web browser?

So far, I’ve tried almost every web browser on the market (even text-based ones like Alpine and Lynx) and haven’t tried yet the “perfect” one.

Not even close.

Sure, I have my favorite browsers. Most of the time, I prefer Firefox over all of them, but Firefox can be a problem. I’m using Firefox on Pop! _OS, which runs on System76 Thelio with 32GB of RAM and if Firefox hits the wrong page, it will eat up a lot of system resources and start crawling your entire desktop.

also: Pop! _OS may have a complicated name but it makes using Linux very easy

And what about Chrome? Don’t get me started on the lack of security built into Google’s browser.

Opera is always next in line after Firefox. When the open source browser starts showing up, I close it and go to Opera. One of the things I really like about this browser is the workspaces feature (which makes tab management a great thing).

But Opera isn’t perfect either. Moreover, Opera is a proprietary browser, which many open source enthusiasts rub the wrong way.

After years of dealing with one problem or another, I’ve concluded that there is no perfect web browser and there never will be.

This is a shame.

Every web browser I use (Firefox, Opera, Safari) has its strengths:

  • Firefox is fast and makes websites close to perfect. It’s also secure and has a lot of third-party extensions that I rely on.
  • Opera doesn’t get bogged down like Firefox does and has the best-in-class tab management feature. Opera also works better with some CMS tools that I have to deal with (especially in the content formatting interface).
  • Safari doesn’t drain the battery on your MacBook Pro like Firefox and Opera do.

You would think that I would only be able to stick with one of those browsers but you would be very wrong. On a daily basis, I have to jump from one browser to another to get things done. One minute I’m working with Firefox and the next opera. Hop on my laptop which is Safari to rescue.

And that makes it a rather confusing (and sometimes frustrating) day.

Best work with one browser. And I’d love for that browser to be Firefox, but the fact of the matter is… I don’t see that happening anytime soon. I know the reality of the situation and there is no (and never will be) a single browser that rules them all.

Sure, you can point to the market share and say Chrome is the queen of browsers. However, a large part of Chrome’s current market share is 65.52%. is the global usage of Android (which runs in the middle of the 70th percentile per month). And yes, there are millions upon millions of users who work with just one browser (no matter how frustrating it may be). But anyone who has spent enough time with technology knows that there will never be a winner in the browser war. And if you think the end user will be the winner… think over and over again.

The sad truth is that we are at the mercy of web browsers and website developers. And no matter how well they do their jobs, no “perfect” will emerge from the pile of options. Until the day of my death, I’m sure I’ll have to keep the browser running at random and my only recourse is to keep every web browser I use as organized as possible. This means clearing caches, restarting, and keeping tabs to a practicable minimum.

I don’t know about you, but the struggle to be a web browser user can definitely be frustrating. However, as long as there are options, we can at least continue to navigate the browser to make sure we are able to be productive, entertained, and informed.

But perhaps, perhaps, one day we will see a holy grail of web browsers appear on the market that will eventually make this concern moot. Until then, I’ll keep switching between Firefox, Opera, and Safari.

What can you do?

The first thing is not to panic. It’s not like your default browser is going to explode in your face. But even if years go by without you seeing a problem, that doesn’t mean there isn’t a problem. This does not mean that there are no things you can and should do. To that end, here is my best advice regarding browsers:

  • Keep more than one browser installed, just in case. I currently have seven browsers installed. Part of that is because I write about technology. The other reason is that when something goes wrong with one of the browsers, I always have another to use (and can wait for troubleshooting). There are also times when I will use a browser for one task and another for a different task. For example, I will use Firefox when security is key and Opera when I know I will be working with many tabs.
  • Keep cache and history clean. This is one of the things everyone should do regularly. Your web browser keeps a cache of many things, some of which are just meant to load pages faster. However, these caches accumulate and when they start getting excessively large, it will slow down the browser. Furthermore, these caches contain cookies and you may not want to hold them for a long time (for security purposes).
  • Do not memorize passwords! Never ever allow your browser to save your passwords. This puts a target on your back. While that, Use a password manager and finish it.
  • Switch to Firefox. Of all the browsers I use, Firefox is not only the most reliable, but also the safest and easiest to clear history (menu > history > clear recent history).

You are unlocked in one browser. I highly recommend everyone to try different methods of the tool. You will most likely find that you enjoy different features from different browsers. While you’re sampling browser tools, don’t think you should be limited to one solution. In fact, multiple solutions to this problem might be the best solution for everyone. Ultimately, you have to make sure that you are using the web browser of your choice intelligently. Do that and you shouldn’t have (lots of) problems.
