York High football players continue to receive Division I scholarships

Several senior football players signed with college football programs this week, but it was also an exciting time for some of the younger YAIAA players.

Two York High football players earned NCAA Division I scholarships this past weekend. Freshman wide receiver David Warde received an offer from the University of Charlotte while Michael McMonigle got offensive offers from Charlotte, Syracuse and James Madison.

It was Warde’s first post-season college show in the school year this fall. The 6-foot-1 receiver caught 63 passes for 933 yards and 10 touchdowns – YAIAA Division I in all three categories. He had five games with over 100 receiving yards.

With two more seasons of high school football, Ward will likely see interest in him grow. Charlotte has been on a Division I FBS team for the past eight seasons and is moving from Conference USA to the American Athletic Conference next season. The 49ers went 3-9 last season.

Warde is also a promising basketball player who averaged 7.9 points, 5.1 rebounds and 2.4 steals for the Bearcats this winter.

“I always saw something in him. I always liked David,” York High quarterback Sam Stoner said last season. “I knew David at the start of the season was going to be one of my most targeted players. He’s developed really well in the last few years.”

On the other hand, McMonigle has been getting Division I interest since the last season. The 6-foot-6, 290-pound tackle received offers from Marshall and Old Dominion last summer after his first season as a starter. He added an offer from Towson this fall and now has six chances after last weekend.

However, Syracuse is the first of the Power Five to offer him an offer. The Orange compete in the ACC and are going 7-5 season and being victorious in the Pinstripe Bowl. Syracuse also has York Suburban alumnus Garth Barkley (a 6-foot-7 defensive lineman) in its squad.

James Madison just moved from Division I FCS to FBS this past season but went 8-3 his first year in the Sun Belt Conference.

McMonigle has also gained interest from a number of top schools including West Virginia and Penn State. Nittany Lions visited Jan 23rd.

The young West Virginia mammoth helped recruits Inferno White and Sam Stoner in last fall’s Seasons of Monsters. He was the MVP on a team that went 6-4 but averaged 450 offensive yards and 45 points per game.

While White topped as a Big 12 school scholarship player, the Bearcats consistently sent players to college programs of all levels throughout head coach Ross Stoner’s seven-year tenure. Stoner said he believes 42 former York High players have been on college rosters since 2016.

This number will continue to grow. Senior defensive tackle Mickey Gray announced his commitment to Division II in Kutztown over the weekend. On the other end of the spectrum, freshman Carmelo McKenzie looks like a budding college recruit.
